BYE-LAWS & GENERAL INFORMATION

CLUB DAYS

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from 5.30pm (except during League home matches – April to June; see below); Saturdays 2.00 – 5.00pm; Sundays 2.00 – 5.00pm (until league matches finish and if no official club coaching is taking place).  On Mondays and Wednesdays, Court 1 is available for Club tennis.  Court 2 will be available for normal play but cannot be booked.

Club days are for social tennis (mainly doubles).  Members do not need to arrange with someone else to play as the board system in the clubhouse operates at these times.  This ensures that everybody gets their turn to play and mix in.  Club days are an ideal way to get to know more of the other members.

CLUB HOUSE AND COURTS: CARE AND MAINTENANCE

A CLEANER HAS BEEN BE HIRED THIS SEASON BUT MEMBERS SHOULD STILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING CARE OF THE COURTS AND THE CLUB HOUSE.

You will need your key to enter or leave the club.  Your clubhouse key lets you into the building where the key for the courts hangs beside the notice boards.  ALWAYS REPLACE THIS KEY AND LOCK UP (COURTS, CLUBHOUSE & GATE) WHEN YOU LEAVE.  ALL MEMBERS ARE EXPECTED TO BRUSH THE COURT THEY HAVE USED AFTER THEY HAVE FINISHED PLAYING.  This is done with the large brushes to be found at the courtside, and is a very important part of maintaining the good playing characteristics of the surface.

During hot weather, spraying the surface with water will keep down the dust and make playing conditions generally more pleasant.  During wet weather, large pieces of foam rubber can be used to mop up puddles from the court.

DRESS

Players should wear appropriate sports clothing except JT who can play in any old stuff.

SHOES

Shoes must be of a type which will not damage the courts ie flat soled.  Running shoes can severely damage the courts.

TEAMS; MATCHES & PRACTICE

The club has men’s (2) and ladies’ (2) teams competing in the East of Scotland Leagues.  Weekly team practices are organized by the team captains to enable people interested in competitive doubles to gain experience.  They are open to those people who are available to play in the matches and teams will often be selected on the basis of performances at the practices.  Men’s team practice is on Saturdays 11am – 2pm and Ladies’ team practice is on Sundays 11am – 1pm.  Once the matches are finished, these sessions will be renamed Gents’ and Ladies’ ‘Competitive Tennis’ and all members will be welcome.

Notice will be given for the dates of home matches.  No other play will be possible after 5.30pm on match nights.

ANNUAL TOURNAMENT

The annual tournament will take place during the period August 03rd - 22nd 2009.

BEGINNERS

Beginners, or people who are not confident enough in their standard of tennis to take part in the club nights etc, will find a list of similar minded people on the notice board to which they can add their own names and telephone numbers.  They should use this list to contact and arrange games with each other.

COACHING

Fiona Shivas is LTA qualified and acts as the club coach. Details of coaching for both juniors and adults will be put up on the notice board. Please do take the time to read the information on what coaching is available and get in touch with Fiona if you have any questions or queries. Her telephone number is: 0131 556 9438.

JUNIORS

Juniors have priority on Court 2 at the following times: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 3.30 – 5.30pm.  During school holidays, junior priority will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10.00am – 12 noon.  They may use the courts at other times if adult members are not waiting for that court.

FREE COURT TIME/ARRANGED PLAY

At all other times arranged play with specific people is possible.  When others are waiting for a court you may play one set, come off and then wait in turn to play again.  Common sense and consideration will avoid most problems during free court time.

VISITORS

All visitors must sign the visitors’ book and pay in accordance with the instructions in the book. Only one visitor will be permitted per member per visit. The same person may only be a visitor a maximum of 4 times per season. A visitors’ book is located in the clubhouse. This must be completed before play.

TENNIS BALLS

Balls can be purchased from the Club at a price, which is usually far cheaper than any of the shops.  Contact any committee member to purchase balls.

CLUB POLICY

Smoking is permitted in designated areas of the club grounds.  No smoking is permitted on the courts or in front of the clubhouse.

MEMBERS ARE EXPECTED TO BEHAVE WITH DUE REGARD AND SHOW CONSIDERATION TO OTHER MEMBERS AND NEIGHBORS OF THE TENNIS CLUB.

THERE WILL BE NO PLAY FOR ANY MEMBER PRIOR TO 9.00AM ON WEEKDAYS AND SATURDAYS, AND 10.00AM ON SUNDAYS.

PREPARATION AND MAINTENANCE OF COURTS

Preparation of the courts will take place during the weekends in March.  All members are invited to come along and help in the preparation work. Play should commence on Saturday 04th of April 2009, weather permitting.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Please keep your eye on the notice board in the clubhouse for any up and coming social events. Following from the success of last year’s midsummer night party, we will be organizing a similar event again this year.
